Classical Spanish Guitars

The image below is a Spanish Guitar soundboard with fan bracing, what is new or different to the traditional construction is the A frame braces that run right through from the end block to the transverse brace below the sound hole. The transverse bracing above the sound hole is doubled, and works in conjunction with the "A" frame bracing, increases the rigidity of the neck to body join, improving the projection of the notes especially above the body join.

In terms of sound and dynamic this configuration offers very good brightness, speed of projection and response.

The fan bracing of a Spanish/ Classical guitar allows for a thinner soundboard than the modern X brace or the ladder bracing of earlier guitars. Fan bracing offers a noticeably warm sound with rich overtones. I shape all my bracing as this reduces the stiffness, allowing the soundboard to resonate to its fullest.

Spanish Classical Nylon String Guitar

Featuring : For soundboards the traditional timber for Spanish guitars is Spruce, I'd like to mention I've had excellent results from Redwood, Kauri and Cedar.
As for back and sides the traditional timbers are Cypress or Rosewood, yet again I have broken from trade-in and had superb results building with native New Zealand timbers such as Matai and a wide range of other timbers.

I build a range of shapes and sizes from cutaway, thin and deep bodies to the traditional small body antique style and traditional Flamenco guitars.

Finish : Nitrocellulose Lacquer.

Detailing : Often a traditional mosaic style rosette, sometimes Paua. In a few cases the musician designs the rosette, and other times I've been asked to do the design.
Inlays : The neck and fret edge unless requested has no inlay or dots.

Hardware : Gotoh or Schaller's tuners.
Frets : Narrow, medium frets : Stainless or nickel silver.
Nut : I make the bridge, the bone saddle is hand carved, shaped and slotted.
